Should Cadbury have rights to the colour purple?

I remember reading in a newspaper once that cadbury sued darryl lea for using the colour purple (and lost), claiming that they own the rights to it. After checking the small print on a cadbury chocolate i realized it said "the colour purple .... is a trademark of cadbury". Isn't this a little farfetched?
